Dental Implants

The advancements in the field of dentistry over the past few decades has brought so much to the table. Among all the innovations, one particular tooth restoration that stands out is the dental implant. Implants are prosthetic teeth that are used to replace missing natural teeth. They are placed in the jawbone just in place of the extracted tooth, which restores both the aesthetics and functionality of the mouth.

Structure of a dental implant

An implant consists of three prominent components, the metal stud, ceramic tooth crown, and the abutment. The metal stud is the part of the implant that is inserted into the jawbone. It is usually made from a hard metal such as titanium and has screw-like grooves on its surface. The ceramic crown is a highly-durable structure that resembles the tooth that is being replaced. The abutment is a connecting element that helps to join both the implant and ceramic crown.

Advantages of choosing implants

  • Dental implants exhibit amazing durability. The dental-grade ceramic that is used to make it is highly resistant to wear and chipping. However, don't use it to tear open plastic bags or bite something hard as it could sustain damage.
  • The appearance of an implant perfectly mimics that of a natural tooth. Anyone looking at your teeth wouldn't be able to distinguish the implant from the natural teeth.
  • The implant would stay firmly fixed to the jawbone as it has grooves on its surface. Since it is made from titanium, the chances of it breaking are next to none.
  • Implants prevent the drifting of the remaining teeth from their orthodontically right positions. Thereby, they prevent a change in the facial shape or the onset of malocclusion.

Procedure

The procedure for getting dental implants would require a few visits to the dentist's office. When you visit our practice for the initial consultation, our dentist will examine your oral set up for signs of tooth decay, gum diseases, drifting of teeth due to tooth extraction and bone deterioration. If any, the dentist will tend to them prior to starting the implant treatment.

During the surgery, local anesthesia will be administered to numb the operating area. High precision dental equipment will be used to make a small hole in the jawbone, where the titanium implant will be inserted. Dental adhesives will be used to firmly fix the implant in the jawbone. The implant will have to heal for a few weeks and the gum tissues will be allowed to grow back.

After the wound has healed, an abutment will be attached to the implant, which acts as a connecting element between the implant stud and the crown. The crown will be prepared in a dental laboratory after the exact measurements and the contour of the tooth is sent. It will be fixed on the abutment with the help of adhesives. Finally, the bite and comfort are checked and any aesthetic adjustments, such as polishing, will be made.

We make sure our patients feel absolutely comfortable during their visit to our practice. Be it surgeries or regular visits to the dentist, we always give it our best.
