A smile that attracts a lot of compliments can play a positive role in our lives. Being able to smile with confidence and socialize without being too conscious of one's appearance is an ability everyone would like to have. But, sometimes, cosmetic dental issues such as chipped teeth could keep us from doing so.
The enamel is known to be the hardest part of our body. Despite possessing this amazing characteristic, our teeth could chip off when we sustain a hard blow to the mouth. A bad fall, a sports-related injury, or any hard blow to the mouth could break the tooth. Sometimes, biting into something too hard could also result in chipping. Chipping is predominant in patients who lack enough calcium in their teeth, making it susceptible to damage.
When a tooth chips, it could be highly painful as chipping of teeth can disturb the nerves underneath it. There could be bleeding as well, which is why you should gargle your mouth with clean water and try to control the bleeding using a piece of gauze. Avoid touching the affected region with bare hands as the microbes in your hand could infect the tooth. We advise getting immediate medical attention from a professional dentist.
Cosmetic dentistry offers a few solutions to restore chipped teeth back to their original structure and functionality. Here are some of them:
Composite bonding:The process of applying a composite resinous material on the teeth to restore its structure is called composite bonding. It is mainly a cosmetic dental procedure but also restores the functionality of the teeth. When you visit our dental practice, we would conduct a thorough diagnosis of the condition and draw out a suitable treatment plan. The tooth needing the restoration will be cleaned thoroughly and prepared for the procedure. The composite resin will be matched with the color, texture, and translucency of the natural tooth. It will be applied to the tooth and shaped accordingly. A curing light will be used to harden the resin, thereby finalizing its shape and structure. It may be trimmed and polished to resemble the exact appearance of the tooth.
Veneers:Ceramic or composite veneers are wafer-thin restorations that are bonded to the frontal surface of the teeth. They help to get rid of minor surface imperfections such as chipping, cracks, discoloration, etc. During the procedure, we would take a highly precise mold of your damaged tooth and use it to fabricate a customized veneer. The veneer will be placed on the tooth and checked for the perfect fit, after which it will be bonded using dental adhesives.
Dental crowns: Severe cases of broken teeth may at times expose the underlying root canal to the microbes. In such cases, the tooth will have to be covered in its entirety. Otherwise, the tooth could develop an infection and put one's entire oral health in jeopardy. Hence, dentists suggest the use of a dental crown to restore such teeth affected by severe chipping. A dental crown resembles an entire tooth in appearance, except that it would be hollow from inside. It would be placed on the tooth and bonded using adhesives. Crowns offer excellent strength, durability, and longevity, making them the go-to solution to several cosmetic dental issues.
